To KU or not to KU? | My Thoughts

Avid readers know, our hobby can get pretty expensive. The average price for a paperback these days is $10, a hardcover is $18 and ebooks are $3-$5 depending on the book. If you’re like me, you can read 2 to 3 books a week, so the spending racks up pretty quickly. I should also note that I’m a full time college student working MAYBE 15 hours a week, so I’m broke. But then I discovered KU! *insert hands in the air emoji here*

KU, also known as Kindle Unlimited is a subscription service by Amazon. You pay $9.99 a month and “you have access to over one million titles in the Kindle Store, including books, audiobooks, and magazines.” (Amazon) Sounds awesome right?! There is a catch though, nothing too major. You can only have 10 KU books at a time. But that 10 “free” books! Remember the math I did earlier? 10 ebooks at $3 is $30! Versus only paying $9.99 a month, ONCE and having access to a bunch of different books.

Unfortunately, we sometimes read books that aren’t our favorites, and wish we didn’t spend the money on it. This is another reason why I love KU! Didn’t love it? No harm done, just return it to Amazon and now you have one more slot available for your next read!

I recently read 5 books in Ruby Dixon’s Ice Planet Barbarians series. Each book in that series is $3 and there’s 10+ books in that series. I LOVE these books and being the broke college student that I am, would hate not being able to read them because of money. This alone, was worth having KU for. It had payed for itself 100 times over.

Look at how many awesome titles are on just the first few pages when you search KU!

This might be an unpopular opinion, but the price of a book does determine if i’ll read it or not. But if it’s on KU? No hesitation what so ever!

Do you have KU? Do you love it or hate it?

AUTHORS! How do you feel about KU? Good for business or not? Let me know!

until next time – xo gabby

  1. Hey Gabby!! I freaking LOVE me some KU!! I’ve been using it for a long time now and I’m always so amazed at how much the selection has grown!! As a broke student myself I love being able to find a book I’ve been wanting to read available on there for free!! I’ve even gotten some of my blogging buddies to use it too lol!! If you’re ever looking for more books on there my co-blogger Ari and I have a weekly series where we share the books on there!!

  2. I’ve been debating for awhile now whether or not to try KU. I loved your post here and it’s given me a lot to think about. I have so many books to read that I own, both on my Kindle and in paperback, but in the future I think I’ll do the 30 day free trial of KU and see how I like it. Thanks for the info!
